The Recession Hits Home

I have become a big fan of NPR’s Planet Money podcast. It’s really helped me to have a better understanding of how complicated and wide-reaching the current economic crisis facing our country and the world really is. How mind-bogglingly large and convoluted. Suffice it to say, there is no one person or administration that will likely be able to solve the problem alone. It will take a Herculean effort by a huge amount of really smart folks to right the ship. Personally, I wish them the best of luck.
So, as I was out running this morning, I was catching up on a number of podcasts ranging from the Bernie Madoff issue to the auto industry bailout issue to the complex and mysterious world of hedge funds. But one small 5-minute segment jumped out at me. It was a segment about a man in Brooklyn, NY who runs a very small printing operation. And I thought, “Ah ha! Finally something I can really relate to.” His is a story of cautious optimism in the face of uncertain times – a theme I would imagine each of us could relate to in our own way.
Here’s the post and the podcast for your listening and learning pleasure.
